Willow Glen Lions mourn the loss of Charter Member Joe McGrady

Joe McGrady portrait low rezWillow Glen Lions sadly reports the passing of Joe (Joseph) McGrady. Lion Joe was a Charter Member of Willow Glen Lions Club (August 2009). Joe became a Lion because of dedication to helping youth. The Student Speakers Contest was a natural for him. He had been active in student tutoring programs while working at General Electric. As chair of the Club’s Student Speakers Contest, he organized and conducted five years of Student Speakers Contests. While she was a District Governor, Karen Fillmore honored Lion Joe for his dedicated service to the program by having him awarded a Harry J. Asian Fellowship in Lions Fourth District Student Speakers Foundation, Inc.

Lion Joe was very active in Willow Glen Lions from the inception and also helped on sight preservation (eyeglasses collection and eye examination/eyeglasses). Joe and wife Joanna are longtime Willow Glen residents. Joe enjoyed sharing produce from their community garden section.

Willow Glen Lions extends condolences to the McGrady family, wife Joanna, daughter Ashleigh and Ashleigh’s husband.

Join the fun! Find out how WG Lions make a difference in our community!

Now that it’s a new year, perhaps you’ve been thinking about how you could enrich your life and/or possibly make a difference in your community.

Every fall some of our WG Lions goes to help out at Walk to School Day, and then in spring to Bike to School Day.
Every fall some of our WG Lions goes to help out at Walk to School Day, and then in spring to Bike to School Day.

For every time you are saddened by the hunger and need in our community, there is a Willow Glen Lions project to stand up for the people who need help. We build our projects based on need. We only wish we could do more, but our club is still young and growing.

Among our projects this past year, we held a Burrito Breakfast at the Cruise for a Cause, raising money to help our charities, including Second Harvest Food Bank. We ran a Wine Tasting at Joseph George Fine wines to help raise funds for Services for Brain Injury. We also joined forces with Cupertino Host Lions Club and measured eyesight and hearing in an entire elementary school to help them find those that needed glasses or hearing aids. We ran a Student Speaker competition to find the best orators and debaters among our high school students, and walked kids and families across busy Lincoln Avenue for the Halloween on the Avenue. We participated in trash pick ups and helped at Walk to School Days. And much more.

So THIS IS THE YEAR you can become someone who makes a difference in Willow Glen and the bay area: by becoming a member of Willow Glen Lions!  Membership does not involve door-to-door soliciting. It does not mean you have to work alone on projects. It does not mean you pay a fortune in dues, or are expected to chip in money on projects.

Even when there's work to be done, the WG Lions have loads of fun while making a difference. Left to right: Jeff Senigaglia, Lucy Asfour and Steve Jackson.

Willow Glen Lions brings together enthusiastic members who want to improve the quality of life for people in our community. We listen to each other’s projects and volunteer to help fellow Lions to make the projects successful. It’s powerful. It’s friendly. And it is really, really fun!

This year we donated hundreds of dollars that we earned through WG Lions projects, to Second Harvest food bank, Santa Maria Urban Ministry for at-risk families and kids, Canine Companions for Independence to help them raise dogs that are miraculous for people with disabilities. And much more

Willow Glen Lions is for you who are busy as well as those who have less going on in their lives. Members of WG Lions have a high number of still-working members, as well as some retired folks.

One of the fun items on our agenda with every Willow Glen Lions meeting is our end-of-the-evening raffle, in which our own members bring gifts of various sorts, and we purchase tickets to try to win something. It’s a first-come, first-served whereas the first winner gets to choose from any gift on the lineup, and each winner thereafter chooses something from what’s left. The gifts vary from bottles of wine (always a favorite!) to previously-and-gently used merchandise such as CDs.

Our first meeting of the New Year started off with great attendance and some cool raffle prizes for all who participated. The raffle selection included everything from a huge bottle of Scotch (won by one of our guests!) to a box of exotic teas… but the prizes that got everyone’s attention were three authentic Mardi Gras feathered masks from New Orleans. With three winners in our midst, the cameras had to capture photos of our wacky and wonderful WGLions posing with the masks.

If you’ve never had a chance to enjoy one of our meetings at Willow Glen Lions Club, mark a date on your calendar to visit us on either the second or fourth Wednesday evening of each month, from 6:30 to 8:30 at Denny’s on Hillsdale just west of Almaden Expressway!
