Keeping up with WG Lions: Events we completed

October 12, 2012 – Walk to School day in Willow Glen

Students, parents, and teachers of San Jose’s River Glen Elementary and Willow Glen Elementary, as well as local non-profit and community organizations such as the Willow Glen Lions Club and Willow Glen Business Association, are pleased to announce a Walk to School Day on October 12.

Parents, teachers, and students will meet at 8am in the Bank of America Parking Lot, then parade together down the sidewalks to their respective schools. We’ll be giving away free umbrellas (in case of rain), balloons, and ice cream coupons to the students!

The program has been developed to encourage children, including those with disabilities, to walk and bike to school, and to make it safer and more appealing — encouraging a healthy and active lifestyle from an early age. This is a national program that Willow Glen Neighborhood Association, the community of Willow Glen, and Willow Glen Lions have been on the forefront on.

Willow Glen Lions assist as crosswalk guards for Halloween in Boo-tiful Downtown Willow Glen

Trick-or-treating in Boo-tiful Downtown Willow Glen has become a tradition! Join the Downtown Willow Glen businesses on Halloween, October 31, as we invite all children to trick-or-treat in costume from 2pm to 4pm at participating businesses. All businesses handing out candy will be located on Lincoln Avenue between Minnesota and Coe and will have a trick-or-treat poster displayed in the window.

Willow Glen Lions, wearing safety vests, will help guide children and parents along the trail and across the street. Look for the trick-or-treat poster in the window to determine which businesses are handing out treats.

This event is sponsored by the Willow Glen Business Association.

Willow Glen Lions joins with Almaden Super Lions for the Annual blanket drive

San Jose children and families are facing another tough winter. DONATE new or gently-used clean blankets and quilts, and you’ll warm bodies as well as spirits.

Deadline for donations of blankets: November 11, 2012

Please drop off your gently-used quilts and blankets at 1150 Hillsdale Ave, Suite # 100 (next to Denny’s), or given to a Willow Glen Lion’s Club member to benefit the Sacred Heart local community center (Alma/Monterey in San Jose), www.shcstheheart.org

Mary Kelly of Almaden Super Lions is again driving this event, which in past years has been a phenomenal success. In fact, in the last three years we have collected over 2500 blankets for Sacred Heart.
